SoniCity traces pathways and velocities and transforms the data into sonic reverberations, resulting in a map that unfolds through time. GPS data is recorded and brought into a custom software application; the individual GPS attributes (eg. Latitude, Longitude) drive the sonic engine. For Open Platform, we are recording an extensive series of GPS tracks within the Tiergarten; by permeating this space with a network of overlapping pathways, we are creating a sonic portrait of the park.
SoniCity was first developed at the Banff New Media Institute in Banff, Canada, and been presented in beta versions during the Cognitive Cities Conference (Berlin, 2011) and at Nida Art Colony (Nida, 2011). This work runs its entire course between mobile phone, desktop computer, sound system, and the human ear. In the future of the work, distribution and dissemination will be handled through online open source market systems.
