Wasteland Twinning hijacks the concept of ‘City Twinning’ and applies it to urban Wastelands in order to generate a network for parallel research and action. By subverting a concept which aims to parade a city’s more predictable and mainstream cultural assets and shifting the focus to Wastelands, questions of value and function are raised. From these questions, new cross-disciplinary practices are being developed. During the past year the collective has been through a process of inviting individuals, collectives and organisations to join us in exchanging ideas and developing a structure for the network. The online network – www.wasteland-twinning.net – functions as a catalyst for collaborative research approaches, critique and experimentation. We currently have partners in Germany, Australia, India, Indonesia,Malaysia, the Netherlands, England, Scotland and Sweden.
The project was presented recently at W139 in Amsterdam and Intercult Stockholm. We primarily work with a website database to present site specific research and explorations.
