rePLACE is an ongoing project that aims to reveal and celebrate the everyday rituals of a city’s inhabitants. Launched in Berlin in 2007, the project has traveled in 2011 to Beirut and Beijing, inviting residents of each city to map out frequent routes from their day-to-day lives, recording the regular patterns and particular moments associated with these daily journeys. The collected routes are archived online, offering others the opportunity to retrace the city in a way that directly relates to the lived experience of those who dwell there.
During a series of workshops co-organized in 2011 by PROGRAM in Berlin, the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut and HomeShop in Beijing, artists, urban researchers and other interested individuals have been invited to revisit some of the submitted routes, exploring new trajectories via historical research, artistic intervention and/or audio-visual documentation.
