Folgen, 2011
Generated from the world of online amateur video, the events and places captured make up Michelle Teran’s installation, Folgen (2011). Essentially, it is an installation that maps a media landscape of the city of Berlin. Upon a large surface, populated with drawings, texts and documentation from videos, a media archive emerges and becomes a physical environment for the re-playing of personal histories.

Teran mines personal archives of various people living in the city, who post and geo-tag their online videos. The videos are self-representative acts, performances and depictions of the everyday, which together form a relation with the city spaces or locations where they transpire. The artist uses these geographic locations encoded in the videos as waypoints to traverse an unofficial, unintentional map of Berlin. Through this process, the city becomes a place to be inhabited and experienced through an other’s narrative — stepping into somebody else’s shoes. The artist finds herself in an ambiguous role between stalker, journalist, anthropologist and guardian angel as a multi-threaded non-linear narrative emerges, paths intertwine and overlapping events occur, including the artist’s own history and experience.
