Changes in the geopolitical climate have eased movement over vast distances for some populations enabling temporary travel and permanent migration. The movement of these people both create and follow the ebb and flow of modern transportation and technology; a flow of 5000 km in a few hours… or ebb of a standstill in congestion. From where do you come? Where will you be tomorrow? Where are you right now? How do you get there? These and other questions about location, mobility, and boundaries have many answers; both distinct paths and vague descriptions. From A to B and That Between will present this conversation visually with novel projected video directly on the architectural wonder that is Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Sensors will watch your movement allowing for direct interaction. We have fewer boundaries in the world of today; therefore, those people remote can also interact using their computer or mobile phone.

This installation was created specifically for Tracing Mobility. The path to that Dale Phurrough took to reach this specific installation can be traced. After university in the southeast of the USA, he joined Microsoft for a 13 year career. He collected art during that time and towards the end chose to create that of his own by producing highly participatory visual performance events; events where the audience was transformed from passive to active participant. Shortly after, he moved to New York City exploring photography, the use of light, and interactive open platforms like Arduino. In his move to Berlin, Dale was inspired by the mix of art, music, and technology in which the city is infused. He created two interactive installations using projected video and sensors. Which brings us to his installation, From A to B and That Between. The physical resources directly used in From A to B and That Between include computers, sensors, projectors, networking electronics, and… gaff tape. The non-physical resources used are harder to quantify and locate; examples would include gigabytes of data transferred over networks, many amperes of electricity, time used for research, occasional pages of paper for drafts, remote servers on different continents to retrieve information, etc. The original location of the data may be unknown, it could be cached or aggregated, one second it is from a server in Amsterdam and the very next second from a server in San Francisco because that first server encountered a fault. This is the world of mobility and it is not always traceable.
